Brief
Leinster Rugby and the Royal Dublin Society ran a competition to design a concept for replacing the North Grandstand at the RDS.
Solution
Inspired by the symbol of Leinster and Leinster rugby, the Irish harp, the new grandstand is sculpted into a modern interpretation of this valued emblem; standing strong at both ends of the stand, instantly synonymous with the RDS.
The grandstand’s linear form symmetrically interlocks with a radial disposition of parts to the east and west. These lower tiered sections of the design are turned awaiting the integration of corner infill to complete the stadium.
The design concept of the new stand is carefully considered so that there is no increase in shadowing to any of the adjacent RDS grounds or areas in the vicinity of the stand. Similarly, the aerodynamic shape of the stand coupled with the translucent properties of the materials selected, ensures that the volume of the stand has no over-shadowing issues.
Careful consideration has been given to how the wind will funnel onto the façade through the stadium to oscillate the façade and harvest the winds energy, thereby eliminating the impact on adjacent buildings.
The design is also sympathetic to its surroundings. The height of the new grandstand rises 6.6m above that of the existing structure, but still respects the local character of the area by ensuring that it is lower than that of the church to the south and the hotel to the north.
Internally the form of the grandstand captures and encloses the main concourse and circulation to provide a sense of order. These naturally ventilated spaces combine the form with the materials and the modulation of the light to harvest a quality and spirit that will be unique to the RDS.
The northern facade of the new grandstand stimulates the senses of the spectators as they move through the space; visually changing and shifting while simultaneously providing views to the arenas sitting behind it. The oscillating façade will provide a rhythmic backdrop to the partisan atmosphere which Leinster Rugby and the RDS is renowned for.
Outcomes
This design proposal creates a premium quality, innovative and sustainable response to the competition’s brief, while honouring the tradition and history of the RDS. By integrating its core values with the design, it is hoped that the new grandstand will become a worldwide symbol and showpiece long into the future for the RDS.
